Bleeding hemorrhoids may either be external or internal with both conditions being very painful. Veins in the anal or rectal area become swollen hence causing pain, bleeding and a lot of discomfort. External hemorrhoid is accompanied with mild pain, swelling, irritation and itchy feelings. They are called external because they occur at the end of anal canal. Blood is drained from some of the inferior veins in the rectal arteries. After rupturing of a blood vein a swelling occurs and thus blood clots. Some prolapsed situations upon defection can be spontaneously reduced, others can only be reduced manually after defection and others may not be reduced once defection occurs. If blood circulation is cu off to the swelling once it is outside the anus, the condition becomes strangulated.
Signs and symptoms of a hemorrhoid are excretion of fresh blood through stool and painful feelings in the anal canal. Swollen lump and itching effect on the anus are also common with the external condition. Fresh blood is noticed in the stool on a toilet paper or in a toilet bowl. For external conditions the swellings may disappear after some few days. But if not addressed to the symptoms may reappear again this time round accompanied with pain.

Other causes are hypertension in the portal veins, excessive intake of alcohol and caffeine, pregnancies and serious constipation. Prolonged sitting on a hard material may lead to pressure on the rectal veins and hence weaken the muscles around the anus.
