What To Eat When On A Bowel Obstruction Diet

Bowel blockage is a very painful and serious condition. Thousands of people are afflicted with this disorder all over the world. The most common causes are hernias, cancer, benign tumors, and impacted feces. Most doctors will insist on sufferers of this illness to stay on a special bowel obstruction diet. Understanding what one can and cannot eat could make the difference between excruciating pain and mild discomfort.

Doctors have studied how the large and small intestine responds to certain foods when undergoing treatment for obstruction. During their studies, there are certain foods that were fine for some patients but were not fine for other patients. Thus, they determined that there are three different diets for three different types of bowel obstruction.

The three categories are called ‘low residue, ‘ minimal residue, ‘ and ‘fluid’ diet. Each of these include lots of variety and choices. Depending on the afflicted person’s symptoms, a doctor will advise one of these three types of eating plans. In each group, there are foods to always restrain from as well as foods that can help one’s symptoms.

A low residue plan is recommended for people who have occasional abdominal cramps, mild bloating and occasional gas. A low residue food plan consists of plenty of cheese, milk, meats that are baked during preparation, eggs, nuts, hummus and most types of raw vegetables and fruits but the skin must be removed. It is important to refrain from seeds, nuts and beans when on this plan.

A medium residue diet is for patients who have constant bloating and cramps that rank 4 and above on a 1-10 scale. This style of eating is very similar to a low residue style of eating but with a few differences. For one thing, one does not need to remove the skin on veggies and fruits. Also, one is encouraged to eat more breads and cereals as well as sweet snacks and pasta.

For the most severe cases of bowel obstruction, one is often put on the fluid diet. This sounds just like what it is. The fluid plan will literally put every food group into a liquid of sorts. Even breads and cereals are offered as a creamy wheat paste. All vegetables and fruits can be consumed but only in liquid form. It is imperative to not eat any solid foods when put on this diet.

The foods that should be avoided by all groups are cheeses with seeds, yogurt mixed with fruits, nuts, seeds, beans, and sausage-type meats (or any meats that have a casing). All three diets are rich in dairy. For patients who are lactose intolerant, powdered milk can replace milk. Also, for people who do not eat meat, tofu is a fine replacement.

Following the correct bowel obstruction diet could be a matter of life or death to the afflicted person. If a patient does not eat correctly, their condition could become markedly worst. On the other hand, eating properly could completely relieve mild discomforts and help the body to heal.
